Sometimes, you aren’t responsible for the source of your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and your activities don’t fit under the other Scope 3 categories in Climate Smart. You can still add these activities to your inventory.
Enter information about other scope 3 emissions from your inventory period into Climate Smart.

Examples of emission sources
Not sure if you should report this emission source? Here are some examples of other scope 3 activities you should consider tracking in your inventory:
- A separate printer for clients
- Hazardous waste incineration
- Email emissions
- Third party server emissions
Prepare the data you need
To get your emissions data ready for Climate Smart, you’ll need to know:
- Mass/weight of GHG release (kilograms or pounds)
- Type of GHG release (for example, carbon dioxide, methane, or nitrous oxide)
Remember to collect information for the relevant inventory period.
Find your emissions data
Not sure where to find the data you need? Try the following suggestions:
Ask your employees
Your accounting department might already have the information you need! Ask your accounting team, building maintenance, building or facilities management, or IT department about collecting data for your emissions inventory.
Get a report from your contractor
If applicable, your contractor might be able to give you a report or invoice with the type and amount of greenhouse gas released by your activity.
Enter data into your inventory
Add this activity to your inventory
Before you can enter information about your emissions, you need to add this activity to your inventory. Learn how to add new activities to your inventory.
Add an entry to your inventory
To enter your data into Climate Smart:
- Under Actual Release, enter the mass (weight) of the GHG release and select the type of GHG from the drop-down list.
- Enter the start and end dates of the activity you’re measuring. These will usually match the dates of your inventory period.
- Enter the cost of your activity (including taxes). If you’re estimating this amount, select the checkbox next to Cost is estimate. Tell us if you paid in Canadian Dollars (CAD) or United States Dollars (USD) from the Currency drop-down list.
- Enter a description of the materials you used (for example, “email emissions”).
- In the Note box, enter optional information including any details that might be helpful for you (or your Climate Smart Advisor, if applicable) in the future.
- When you’re done, click ADD ENTRY. Your entry will appear in the table below.
