If you’re estimating your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transporting goods based on how far the delivery vehicle travelled, you’ll need to enter how many tonnes of goods per kilometre (tkm) you shipped in Climate Smart.
Here’s how to convert your shipping data into tonne-kilometres (tkm).
On this page:
How to calculate tkm
To convert your shipping data into tonne-kilometres (tkm), you’ll need to multiply the distance (kilometres) by the weight (tonnes) of each shipment.
Follow this formula:
Shipment A: (distance x weight)
Shipment B: (distance x weight)
Shipment C: (distance x weight)
A+B+C = D
D = tonne-kilometre (tkm)
For example:
Shipment A: (615 x 0.2 = 123)
Shipment B: (435 x 1 = 435)
Shipment C: (615 x 0.3 = 184.5)
123 + 435 + 184.5 = 742.5
Tonne-kilometre (tkm) = 742.5
In this case, you shipped 724.5 tkm of goods. Enter these values into Climate Smart to estimate your GHG emissions.

When to calculate tkm
You might need to use this calculation if you choose to estimate by distance for any of these activities:
- Transporting goods > Vehicles you own > Road
- Transporting goods > Vehicles you own > Air
- Transporting goods > Vehicles you own > Water
- Transporting goods > Vehicles you own > Rail
- Transporting goods > Vehicles owned by others > Road
- Transporting goods > Vehicles owned by others > Air
- Transporting goods > Vehicles owned by others > Water
- Transporting goods > Vehicles owned by others > Rail
