The unit of measurement used for carbon accounting is metric tonnes of carbon equivalents (tCO2e). In Climate Smart, your emissions are automatically calculated in tCO2e as you enter data about your activities.
There are 7 main greenhouse gases (GHGs):
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Methane (CH4)
- Nitrous oxide (N2O)
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
- Perfluorocarbons (PCFs)
- Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)
- Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3)
Each GHG has a different level of impact on the greenhouse effect. The most referenced GHG is carbon dioxide. To simplify carbon accounting and make it easier to compare your emission sources, all GHGs are converted into carbon dioxide equivalents in your GHG inventory.
